This is a social event for EMNLP 2020 attendees, organized independently by Sam Bowman at NYU in coordination with the conference diversity & inclusion chairs. The goal is to recreate an important part of any conference: Getting to know new people with interests that are similar to yours. All registered EMNLP 2020 attendees are welcome, no matter where you are or how much experience you have with NLP.

In the social, you'll be assigned to a small group (likely 4–7 people) based on the interests that you list when you sign up. I'll use automatic clustering methods (bare-bones source release here) to form groups. You'll get an hour to get to know the other people in your group over a video call, though I hope you'll keep in touch with them after the hour is over!

There will be three sessions, and I'll assign different groups for each of the three sessions. You can sign up for one, two, or three sessions. I recommend that you use the Google Calendar or ICS links below to add the sessions that you request to your calendar, so that you can make sure that you'll be available for the call that you signed up for:

To sign up, submit the form (see button above) by the first day of the conference. It's due Tuesday 17 Nov, 11:00 PM UTC. You'll get an email a shortly before each session with instructions.

The socials are covered by the ACL Anti-Harassment Policy. If you sign up, be prepared to have a friendly and respectful conversation with whoever you get matched with.
